Qal'at Ja'bar, Medieval castle on Lake Assad, Syria
The stone fortress stands on an artificial island in Lake Assad, connected to the mainland by a purpose-built causeway spanning the water.
The castle underwent major reconstruction in 1168 under Nur ad-Din, transforming it from earlier fortifications that dated back to the seventh century.
The castle contains the tomb of Suleyman Shah, grandfather of Osman I, making it a significant structure in Turkish and Syrian historical narratives.
Visitors reach the castle via a constructed pathway across Lake Assad, with the structure measuring 370 by 170 meters surrounded by 35 defensive towers.
The castle transformed from a hilltop fortress into an island stronghold after the creation of Lake Assad through the construction of Tabqa Dam.
