Thoeng

Thoeng is an administrative district in Chiang Rai Province that spans mountainous land with numerous small towns and villages throughout its area. The Ing River runs through the district, and forested hills dominate the landscape, creating a terrain of varied elevation and natural features.

This district developed under the Lanna Kingdom, when local rulers established fortifications, canal systems, and religious structures across the region. These early works shaped settlement patterns and formed the foundation for how the area developed over time.

The Ngan Dok Siaw Ban Festival in February draws hill tribe communities together for traditional performances and friendly competitions. Visitors can experience local music, dance, and crafts that reflect the daily customs of these groups.

The area is divided into smaller administrative sections with two main townships serving as hubs for local services and facilities. The mountainous terrain means getting around on foot or using local transport works best when exploring different parts of the district.

Nong Khuang is a natural swamp within the district that offers fishing opportunities and changes with the seasons. This wetland allows visitors to see local plants and wildlife in their natural setting without crowds or barriers.
