Wat Chet Yot

Wat Chet Yot, Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand

Wat Chet Yot is a Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai built around seven prominent chedis decorated with detailed patterns and positioned above a central pyramidal foundation. The complex includes several supporting structures and open spaces that create functional areas for worship and daily activities.

The temple was built during the Lanna Kingdom period and draws architectural inspiration from the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India. This foreign influence shaped how the structure was designed and laid out.

The temple serves as a living center for Buddhist practice where visitors can watch monks engage in meditation and daily rituals that connect to centuries of tradition. The space draws people seeking spiritual connection, making it a meaningful gathering place for the local community.

The temple is located near downtown Chiang Rai and accessible on foot without entrance charges for visitors. Wear comfortable shoes to explore the grounds comfortably, and early mornings offer better lighting for photography and fewer crowds.

The outer walls feature 70 stucco reliefs of divine beings whose faces were modeled after members of the ancient royal family. This blend of religious and royal imagery creates a distinctive visual feature rarely seen elsewhere.
