Khok Phanom Di, Archaeological site in Tha Kham, Thailand.

Khok Phanom Di is a registered archaeological site in the Bang Pakong River Valley in Chachoengsao Province, Thailand. The site consists of layered ancient settlements where human remains, pottery, and tools have been uncovered during excavations.

The site was occupied around 4,000 years ago by a prehistoric community that lived near the coast, as the sea was much closer at that time than it is today. Systematic excavations in the late 20th century uncovered around 150 burials, making it one of the most important prehistoric finds in Southeast Asia.

The pottery found at Khok Phanom Di is so carefully made that researchers believe certain craftspeople were dedicated to producing it full time. This points to a community that had already developed a form of specialization, which is rare for such an early period.

The site is located in Tha Kham and is most easily reached by private vehicle, as public transport connections in the area are limited. Since much of the ground is outdoors and exposed, bringing light clothing and sun protection is a good idea, especially in the warmer months.

One of the most notable burials found here contained a woman buried with over 120,000 shell beads, suggesting she held a very high position in the community. This single find has given researchers a rare window into how status was expressed in prehistoric coastal societies.
