Sukhothai palace, Royal palace in Wachira Phayaban, Thailand
Sukhothai Palace is a registered historic site in Wachira Phayaban, Thailand, displaying royal buildings and courtyards spread over landscaped grounds. Stone carvings decorate the walls and columns, while the halls served for ceremonies and receptions.
The complex originated in the 13th century as the administrative seat of the Sukhothai Kingdom and served rulers as a residence and governing site. In the 14th century it was abandoned when political power shifted to Ayutthaya.
The palace grounds host regular exhibitions of Thai classical dance performances, traditional music concerts, and ceremonial events throughout the year.
Access is available daily from early morning until late afternoon, with guided tours in several languages offered at the entrance. Comfortable shoes help when exploring the extended grounds with their various buildings and pathways.
Raised platforms beneath the main buildings lifted royal chambers above ground level and marked the status of occupants. Water features in the complex followed a deliberate arrangement connected to the cosmology of the Sukhothai realm.
