Royal Elephant National Museum, National museum in Dusit, Thailand
The Royal Elephant National Museum occupies two single-story buildings near the east entrance of Dusit Garden, featuring exhibits about elephants in Thai society.
The museum opened on August 12, 1992, to commemorate Queen Sirikit's 60th birthday, transforming the former royal elephant stables from King Rama V's era.
The museum displays the ceremonial altar room and shrine for the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant, an honor the King presents for national service.
The museum contains extensive collections of paintings, sculptures, and artifacts that document the role of elephants in Thai warfare, agriculture, and ceremonies.
White elephants exhibited in the museum possess seven distinct characteristics in their skin, eyes, palate, ears, toenails, genitals, and tail.
