Wat Choeng Tha, Buddhist temple in Tha Hin, Thailand
Wat Choeng Tha is a Buddhist temple featuring a Khmer-style prang with niches facing all cardinal directions that once held standing Buddha images. Small chedis are scattered around the main structure across the grounds.
The temple was originally called Wat Klang and renamed during King Narai's reign when Chao Phraya Kosa Pan oversaw its restoration. This change reflected a major renewal of the site in the mid-1600s.
The temple faces the old Lopburi River to the south, breaking from the usual eastern orientation found in other temples. This choice shaped how the site relates to the water and the landscape around it.
Take time to walk around the entire grounds and view the structures from different angles to appreciate the layout. The location near the old riverbank makes a stroll along the site particularly rewarding.
Excavations in 2020 uncovered brick slopes at the riverbank suggesting ancient boat landings that connected the temple to the Grand Palace by water. This discovery reveals how the site was integrated into the region's water routes.
