French Indochina constructed this detention facility in 1893 to imprison Thai rebels from Chanthaburi who opposed the colonial occupation in the region.
The name Khuk Khi Kai translates to 'bird-drop prison' in Thai, reflecting the practice of keeping chickens on the roof above imprisoned individuals.
The prison opens daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, allowing visitors to examine the ventilation holes in walls and understand confinement conditions.
The roof design permitted chicken droppings to fall inside the cells, creating an additional method of punishment for the detained inhabitants.
