Khuk Khi Kai, Historic prison in Pak Nam Laem Sing, Thailand.

Khuk Khi Kai is a small brick prison building in Pak Nam Laem Sing, Thailand, measuring roughly 4.4 meters in length and width and standing about 7 meters tall. The structure features thick walls with ventilation holes and an open roof design intended for raising chickens.

The prison was built in 1893 during French colonial rule over Indochina to detain Thai rebels from Chanthaburi who resisted the foreign occupation. This small structure stands as a reminder of the struggles and oppression of that era.

The name Khuk Khi Kai means 'chicken-drop prison' in Thai, referring to the practice of keeping chickens on the roof above the inmates. You can still sense how this everyday aspect shaped the harsh reality of life inside these walls.

The prison stands in an open area along the Pak Nam Laem Sing waterfront and is easy to spot from the main road. Take time to examine the ventilation holes closely and walk around the building to understand how confined the space really was.

The roof was deliberately left open so chickens roamed on top and their droppings fell into the cells below. This cruel design feature was no accident but an intentional method to humiliate and torment the prisoners held inside.
