Wat Mai Amatarot, Buddhist temple in Ban Phan Thom, Thailand.
Wat Mai Amatarot is a registered historic temple in the Ban Phan Thom neighborhood of Bangkok, built during the Rattanakosin period. The compound includes several buildings with tiered roofs, hand-carved wooden details, and painted gables typical of classic central Thai temple architecture.
The Ban Phan Thom neighborhood was founded by craftspeople from Nakhon Si Thammarat who brought their metalworking skills to Bangkok. The temple grew out of this community and was later listed as a protected historic site.
Wat Mai Amatarot is an active place of worship where monks perform daily rituals and locals bring offerings in the early morning. The gates of the compound are decorated with figures from Thai mythology, which you can observe as you walk in.
The temple sits in a residential area close to the river and is easy to reach on foot from nearby piers and markets. Visitors should cover their shoulders and knees, as this is expected at all Buddhist sites in Thailand.
The nielloware craft tradition tied to this neighborhood is kept alive by a single family that has passed the technique down across generations. Their workshop, one of the last of its kind in Thailand, can be found just steps from the temple.
