Thawet Naruemit bridge, Historic bridge in Wachira Phayaban, Thailand
The Thawet Naruemit Bridge spans across Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem canal, linking multiple districts of Bangkok through its steel and concrete construction. It serves as a major passage for both vehicle and foot traffic in this part of the city.
King Chulalongkorn inaugurated this bridge on June 30, 1899, making it the first structure to cross Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem at that location. The project was an important step in connecting Bangkok's expanding districts during that period.
The bridge's name comes from the Hindu god Shiva, showing how deeply Hindu traditions shaped the naming of Bangkok's structures. You see this same pattern repeated throughout the city in other important landmarks.
A nearby pier provides boat connections to other parts of the city, while bus lines also serve the bridge area. The best time to cross is in the morning or late afternoon when traffic is lighter.
The bridge underwent complete restoration in 1975 and received additional renovations in 2021 to preserve its original architectural features. These conservation efforts have helped the structure maintain its historical character while adapting to modern needs.
