Mae Wang National Park

Mae Wang National Park, National park in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand

Mae Wang National Park is a nature reserve in Chiang Mai Province with forests and mountains ranging from 400 meters to 1,909 meters in elevation. The grounds feature different types of forest, numerous waterfalls, and a network of hiking trails throughout.

The area became an official national park in 2009, protecting approximately 119 square kilometers of natural land. This designation helped preserve forest areas and wilderness that hold great importance for the region.

Elephant camps in the area show traditional care methods practiced by local communities for many generations. You can watch how these animals play an important role in the everyday life of the people who work with them.

You should arrive with good hiking shoes and water-resistant clothing, as trails can be slippery after rain. The best time to visit is the dry season, when paths are easy to walk and waterfalls flow strongly.

The Thanon Thong Chai mountain range in the park feeds three major river systems that flow into the Ping River. These waterways are central to the ecology of the wider region and shape its water and forest systems.
