The Democracy Bridge 1954, Road bridge in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand
The Democracy Bridge is a 350 meter road crossing made of prestressed concrete that spans the Mun River and connects Warin Chamrap with Ubon Ratchathani. The structure carries National Highway 204 with four traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways.
Construction began in 1953 under the Phibul government and was completed in 1954. This completion marked a major infrastructure advancement for northeast Thailand.
The name Seriprachathippatai Bridge combines Thai terms for freedom and democracy with the Buddhist calendar year 1954. This naming reflects the political ideals that shaped the region during the bridge's completion.
The structure crosses the river on a stable foundation with three piers that makes it resistant to flooding. Visitors and vehicles can use the bridge freely during daylight hours to travel across the region.
At its opening in 1954, this was the longest bridge in Thailand, a remarkable engineering accomplishment for that era. The design avoided welded steel frames, instead relying entirely on prestressed concrete construction.
