Lednik Garmo, Glacier system in Pamir Mountains, Tajikistan
Lednik Garmo is a glacier system in the Pamir Mountains that stretches for about 13 kilometers through high mountain terrain. It connects with the larger Fedchenko Glacier and feeds water into the river systems that flow across Central Asia.
Scientific measurements during a joint expedition in 1928 first documented the glacier's movement and elevation patterns in this section of the Pamirs. These early observations established a foundation for tracking changes over time.
The glacier supplies water to mountain villages downstream, where communities depend on its meltwater for farming and other daily needs. This water source shapes how people live and work in these high-altitude settlements.
To reach the glacier, visitors must travel through the settlement of Poimazor, located about 15 kilometers to the south at an elevation of around 2,785 meters (9,140 feet). The high altitude and remote location require good physical preparation and proper mountain gear.
The glacier retreats visibly each year, losing roughly 50 meters of length along its slopes. Between 1986 and 2012, it lost about 1,300 meters in total, revealing the rapid changes occurring in this high mountain region.
