Peak Korzhenevskaya, Summit in Pamir Mountains, Tajikistan
Peak Korzhenevskaya rises to 7,105 meters (23,310 feet) in the Academy of Sciences Range, surrounded by the Muksu River and Fortambek Glacier. The summit sits in an isolated section of the Pamir region with difficult access and harsh alpine conditions.
A Russian explorer discovered the summit in 1910 and named it after his wife, who accompanied him during scientific expeditions. In 2020, the government of Tajikistan officially renamed the peak to a term meaning freedom.
The mountain is part of the Snow Leopard peaks, a collection of five summits in former Soviet territories that climbers ascend to earn recognition within the mountaineering community.
Climbers reach base camp exclusively by helicopter due to impracticable terrain below the summit. Visitors should prepare for extreme altitude, low temperatures, and rapidly changing weather conditions.
The mountain lies in an area experiencing significant glacier retreat, which has altered the climbing route and conditions for reaching the summit. This ongoing change makes each ascent a different experience for climbers who revisit the area years later.
