Peak Korzhenevskaya, Summit in Pamir Mountains, Tajikistan
Peak Korzhenevskaya is a summit in the Academy of Sciences Range within the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan, rising to 7,105 meters (23,310 feet). It stands near the Fortambek Glacier and the Muksu River, deep within one of the most remote mountain regions in Central Asia.
A Russian explorer identified the summit in 1910 and named it after his wife, who took part in his scientific journeys through the region. In 2020, the Tajik government gave the peak a new official name meaning freedom.
The mountain is one of five peaks known as the Snow Leopard summits, spread across former Soviet territories, which climbers ascend to earn a recognized title in the mountaineering world. Only a small number of people have completed all five, making the achievement a point of pride among serious climbers.
Climbers typically reach base camp by helicopter, as the terrain below the summit makes other approaches very difficult. Conditions at this altitude are extreme, with intense cold and weather that can shift quickly, so preparation for high-altitude climbing is essential.
The glaciers surrounding the mountain have been retreating for decades, which has shifted the climbing routes and means that climbers who return find different conditions from their first attempt. This ongoing change also makes the area a point of interest for researchers studying how high-altitude ice is responding to a warming climate.
