Konye-Urgench, Archaeological site in northern Turkmenistan.
Konye-Urgench is an archaeological site in northern Turkmenistan near the Uzbekistan border. The ruins contain several mausoleums, minarets, and fortifications scattered across a broad desert plain.
The city served as capital of the Khwarazmian Empire from the 10th to 14th centuries, thriving as a major trading hub. Mongol forces destroyed it in 1221, and it never fully recovered.
The Turabek-Khanum Mausoleum displays sophisticated geometry in its dome design, with mosaics showing stars and flowers. The decoration reveals how craftspeople of that era blended mathematics with beauty and spiritual meaning.
Visitors should expect extreme desert conditions with little shade, so bring plenty of water and sun protection. The closest town with hotels and supplies is Dashoguz, where you can gather information before heading to the ruins.
The Kutlug-Timur Minaret rises about 60 meters high and ranks among the tallest brick minarets built in that era. Its striking height makes it visible from far away and demonstrates the engineering skill of medieval builders.
