Kutlug Timur Minaret, Medieval minaret in Konye-Urgench, Turkmenistan.
Kutlug Timur Minaret is a medieval tower in Konye-Urgench with a cylindrical shape and decorative brickwork across its surface. The structure rises to approximately 62 meters with a base diameter of about 12 meters.
The tower was built in 1011 during the Khwarazmian dynasty and maintained its basic structure for centuries. In 1330 it was modified under ruler Kutlug-Timur, who added enhanced architectural details to the exterior.
The minaret displays Islamic architectural features through intricate brickwork and Kufic script on its outer walls. These decorative elements reflect how the structure served its religious purpose in the city's layout.
The minaret sits within the archaeological complex of Konye-Urgench, which holds UNESCO World Heritage status since 2005. Visitors can explore the site on foot, as the ancient structures are spread across the area near the modern town.
The minaret served as a critical landmark for desert travelers and was one of approximately 60 similar towers built across medieval Central Asia. These structures formed a system that helped guide caravans navigating the trade routes.
