Kyzyl-Kala, Ancient fortress in Beruniy District, Uzbekistan
The square-shaped fortress features defensive towers on both sides with walls reaching 16 meters high and containing arrow-shaped openings for protection.
Built between the 1st and 4th centuries, Kyzyl-Kala served as an auxiliary outpost of Khiva until its decline during the Mongol invasion in the 13th century.
The fortress contained residential quarters, a Zoroastrian temple, and a main street, with archaeologists discovering frescoes, jewelry, and bronze lamps within its walls.
Visitors enter through the second floor entrance in the southeast using a ramp, with information boards in multiple languages explaining the fortress details.
Local stories tell of an underground treasure guarded by snakes in the basement, where reptiles frequently shelter from the desert sun.
