Islam Khodja minaret, Brick minaret in Khiva, Uzbekistan.
Islam Khodja minaret is a brick tower in Khiva reaching about 57 meters tall with a base diameter of roughly 9.5 meters that narrows toward the top. The structure features ceramic decorations and contains internal stairs leading to an observation platform.
The minaret was completed in 1910 under the direction of Grand Vizier Islam Khodja during Khan Isfandiyar's reign. This building project took place when Khiva was establishing itself as a significant regional center.
The structure displays horizontal bands of blue and white ceramic tiles alternating with ochre bricks, following traditional Khorezm architectural patterns. These decorative elements are characteristic of regional building methods and shape the overall appearance of the old city.
Visitors can climb internal stairs to reach the observation platform offering views across thousands of domes and buildings throughout Khiva. The climb requires sturdy footwear and some stamina, but the views are worthwhile.
The minaret's tapered shape creates an optical effect that makes the structure appear taller than its actual measurements. This impression develops from the narrowing design and horizontal decorations that emphasize its vertical quality.
