Konya Ark, Palace and fortification in Khiva, Uzbekistan
Konya Ark is a palace and fortification that spans multiple hectares within Itchan Kala, containing numerous administrative buildings, reception halls, and residential quarters. These structures were arranged around a central courtyard that served as the administrative center of the region.
Construction of this fortress began in 1686 under Muhammad Erenke and served for several centuries as the central seat of the Khanate of Khiva. The site was gradually expanded and adapted to meet the needs of successive khans.
The rooms inside display Persian influences through blue and white majolica tiles and a silver-decorated throne room. These ornaments show how the khans presented their power through craftsmanship and artistic display.
The entrance gate leads visitors through two towers to the Kurnysh Khan courtyard, where guided tours explain the functions of different chambers and living spaces. It is helpful to wear comfortable shoes and plan your visit for earlier hours of the day to avoid the strongest heat.
A mint operated within the fortress during the reign of Khan Muhammad Rahim I, producing coins for the khanate. More than 300 of these coins are now preserved at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
