Xorazm Region, Administrative region in northwestern Uzbekistan.
Xorazm Region is an administrative area in northwestern Uzbekistan that lies in the lower reaches of the Amu Darya River. This territory borders both Turkmenistan and the Karakalpak autonomous republic.
The region gained its administrative status in January 1938 during the Soviet period as part of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic. It became a region of independent Uzbekistan following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
The name Xorazm comes from ancient sources and refers to a historical kingdom that shapes the identity of people living here today. The local dialect and traditions set this region apart from other areas of the country.
The region has a developed transportation network with rail and road connections linking the main city of Khiva with other towns. Visitors should expect a dry climate, making light clothing and sun protection essential.
The region grows gurvak melons in its fields, a special variety adapted to the local climate and soil. Despite limited water resources, extensive cotton fields shape the landscape and remain economically important.
