Itchan Kala south gate, City gate at Itchan Kala fortress, Khiva, Uzbekistan.
The south gate of Itchan Kala is a fortified passage with two defensive towers facing outward and runs through the ten-meter-high fortress wall. The corridor is narrow and lined with stone walls on both sides, creating the main entrance to the inner citadel.
The gate was built in 1806 during a period when the city was expanding and strengthening its defenses. It has been maintained through various interventions over the centuries to protect its structure.
This passage served as a trading hub where merchants displayed goods and travelers exchanged supplies. The narrow corridors around it still show signs of its role as a meeting point for commerce and exchange.
Visitors can walk through the narrow passage and examine the stone walls up close. The site is easy to access and offers a clear view of the old fortification design from outside the walls.
Adjacent to the main structure stand several small rooms that once served as customs checkpoints and guard posts, managing the flow of goods through the gate. These auxiliary buildings reveal the practical organization required for historical trade routes.
