Itchan Kala east gate, City gate at Itchan Kala, Khiva, Uzbekistan.

Polvon Darvoza is a substantial fortified gate on the eastern side of Itchan Kala, built from reddish brick with barrel-vaulted passageways running through its walls. The structure uses thick columns to support the arched entrance, designed to control traffic while maintaining strong defensive features.

This gate was built in the 18th century as one of four main entrances protecting Khiva's inner city during times of regional conflict. Its construction reflects the city's need to strengthen its defenses against external threats during that period.

The gate displays traditional Uzbek building techniques in its geometric patterns and carved decorations, showing how builders used local materials and methods to create strong structures. People who walk through today can see these same design approaches in many other buildings around the old city.

The gate is open year-round and photographs best in early morning or late afternoon when light brings out the carved details. The passageway can feel narrow when groups move through, so visiting at quieter times helps you explore the space more comfortably.

Hidden chambers and narrow passages built into the thick walls once allowed guards to watch anyone entering and leaving the city from protected positions. These concealed spaces reveal how carefully the defense system was designed to control movement.
