Métouia, Village and municipality in the Gabès Governorate, Tunisia
Métouia is a village and municipality in the Gabès Governorate, in southern Tunisia. It is made up of simple houses along narrow streets and has a craft area with workshops where local artisans produce traditional goods.
Métouia has long been a place of traditional craftsmanship within the Gabès Governorate. In more recent times, public funding was used to develop the workshop spaces and add training rooms for new generations of artisans.
Pottery and fiber crafts have been practiced in Métouia for generations, and they remain a visible part of daily life in the village. Visitors can watch artisans at work in the workshops and buy pieces directly from the people who made them.
The village is in the Gabès Governorate and is easiest to reach by car, as public transport connections are limited. A morning visit tends to work best, since artisans are usually in their workshops at that time of day.
Alongside the workshops in Métouia, a design hub was set up in nearby Gabès to link craft research and innovation with traditional techniques. This network of workshops and creative spaces across the area is still rare in Tunisia.
