Dar Jellouli Museum, Folk traditions museum in Medina of Sfax, Tunisia
Musée Dar Jallouli is a museum in the Medina of Sfax housed in a three-story building organized around a central marble courtyard. T-shaped rooms surrounding the courtyard display regional artifacts and rotating exhibitions.
The building started as a residence for Andalusian refugees in the 17th century, later purchased by Farhat al-Jalouli, a military commander and weapons trader. The structure reflects the period when Sfax was transforming into a major commercial port.
The ground floor displays scenes of 18th-century life, while upper levels hold traditional clothing and Islamic calligraphy from the region. You can see how people arranged their homes and what they valued through the objects left behind.
The building is easy to navigate with rooms arranged around an open courtyard and stairs connecting all levels. Morning visits work best, as the light illuminates the decorative details and crowds are smaller.
The interior features white marble flooring, blue ceramic tiles covering the walls, and carved stucco ornaments framing the doorways. These decorative crafts reveal the skilled building tradition that flourished across North Africa.
