Bab El Kasbah, Historic gate in Medina of Sfax, Tunisia
Bab El Kasbah is a historic gate in the Medina of Sfax with two entrances supported by stone columns. Both passages lead to a central square bordered by traditional religious buildings and gardens.
Originally known as Bab Jedid, this gate was constructed in the late 19th century to reduce congestion at other Medina entrances. A 1960 renovation added a secondary entrance beside the main gateway, creating a dual-entry system.
The gate opens onto a central square where the Sidi Ilyes Mosque, Cheikh Meftah Mausoleum, and Madrasa Abbassiya stand as landmarks of Islamic architecture. These buildings shape the appearance of the square and create a meeting point for worshippers and visitors.
The gate is accessible via Ali Belhouane Avenue, which connects to Resistance Square and Dakar Gardens in modern Sfax. The location is easy to explore on foot and links directly to the surrounding parks.
The dual-entrance layout allows two separate traffic flows when needed, a practical feature that reflects how the gate adapted to modern city demands. This system remains one of few such arrangements among the traditional gates of Sfax.
