Souk Es Sekajine, Traditional leather market in Medina of Tunis, Tunisia.
Souk Es Sekajine is a traditional leather market in the Medina of Tunis, located west of Al-Zaytuna Mosque and east of Bab Menara gate. Rows of shops sell leather goods, saddles, and horse equipment, with two remaining saddlemakers continuing their craft among other merchants.
This souk originated in the 15th century and underwent significant renewal in the 18th century under Al-Husayn I ibn Ali of the Husainid Dynasty. That revival shaped the market as it appears today.
The name Es Sekajine comes from ach-chakkazine, referring to craftsmen who made achkouz, high-quality leather saddles for horses. Workshops here still demonstrate traditional techniques that have been handed down for generations.
The market features narrow passages between shops, so wear comfortable shoes and allow time for unhurried exploration. Coming early in the day when shops open and crowds are lighter makes for a better visit.
The market holds a memorial to the Unknown Soldier and the tomb of Anselm Turmeda, marked with plaques in Arabic and Catalan. These two sites reflect the layered history contained within this trading space.
