Tourgueness lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse in Medenine Governorate, Tunisia
Phare de Taguermess is a cylindrical tower made of white stone standing on the Tunisian coast near the Mediterranean waters. The structure rises about 49 meters tall and sits on elevated ground roughly 64 meters above sea level.
The lighthouse was built in 1895 during the French colonial period to guide ships through waters off the Tunisian coast. It has served continuously since its construction, becoming a fixture in regional maritime navigation.
The structure operates under the Tunisian Lighthouse Services, supporting maritime navigation with local keepers maintaining the original French optical system.
The lighthouse sits on a rocky promontory reachable from the nearby road but offers limited public access since it remains an active navigation station. Best appreciated from the outside to view the structure and surrounding coastal landscape.
The tower emits a white light flash every five seconds that can reach ships up to 24 nautical miles away. This makes it a reliable reference point for captains navigating the waters in this region.
