Ksar Ouled Brahim

Ksar Ouled Brahim is a square-shaped granary fortress in Medenine with about 140 storage chambers arranged on two levels within thick stone walls. The layout follows a traditional design where the chambers sit close together and share stairs and courtyards.

This fortress was built in the early 19th century under the initiative of Sidi Ali Ben Abid. By 1930, it had become part of Tunisia's largest concentration of fortified granaries.

The storage chambers here show how local communities managed their harvests across generations. Visitors can still see how these rooms were designed to fit daily life and work routines in this region.

The site is located in central Medenine near Sidi Ali Ben Abid Mosque and is easily reached on foot. Visitors can walk through the chambers, browse traditional crafts being sold, and visit the café at the entrance.

The structure combines defensive features with storage functions, a design that is uncommon in southern Tunisia. This combination makes it a distinctive example of Mediterranean fortification architecture.
