Walls of Constantinople, Ancient city walls in Turkey

The Walls of Constantinople are a series of defensive stone walls that have surrounded and protected the city of Constantinople since its founding as the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire.

Built by Emperor Theodosius II in the 5th century, they were the last great fortification system of antiquity.

They have been a prominent landmark of Istanbul and are a symbol of the city's rich history.

Today, parts of the walls are still standing and can be visited by tourists.

Despite numerous attacks throughout history, the Walls of Constantinople were only ever breached twice.
