Van, Metropolitan municipality in eastern Turkey
Van is a large city in eastern Turkey and lies on the eastern shore of Lake Van at 1,730 meters elevation, surrounded by mountains and fertile agricultural lands. The settlement extends along the waterfront and connects modern districts with older neighborhoods near historical sites.
The founding of the city dates to 5000 BC, with major development during the Urartian Empire when King Sardur I built the citadel. Later rule by Persians, Armenians, and Byzantines shaped the region before it came under Ottoman control.
The Van Museum displays artifacts from regional excavations, including Urartian inscriptions, pottery, and metalwork from different historical periods. The collection offers insights into the material culture of several civilizations that settled here.
Van Airport connects the city with regular flights to Istanbul and Ankara, while buses and minibuses provide transportation within the urban area. The elevation results in cooler temperatures than other Turkish cities, so visitors should pack appropriate clothing.
The region produces natural dyes and silver crafts, and maintains a specific breed of white cats with different-colored eyes native to the area. These cats often swim in the lake and are considered a symbol of the city.
