Didyma

Didyma is an ancient Greek sanctuary near Didim on the Turkish coast, known for its large Temple of Apollo. The ruins reveal the remains of an extensive religious complex with massive stone structures, columns, and archaeological remains spread across a large site.

The sanctuary was founded in antiquity and served as a religious center until suffering damage during Persian invasions. It was later rebuilt under various rulers, including the period following Alexander the Great, and remained an important site for centuries.

The sanctuary served as a destination for pilgrims seeking prophecies from Apollo's oracle and making offerings to the god. The site became deeply woven into the spiritual life of ancient peoples across the region.

The site is relatively open and requires comfortable shoes for exploring the ruins and columns. It is wise to visit early in the day or later in the afternoon when it is cooler and the sun is less intense for a more pleasant visit.

Despite hundreds of years of construction efforts through different cultures, the temple was never fully completed. This unfinished structure remains visible today and reveals the ambitious plans of the ancient architects.
