Burhaniye, Coastal district on the Aegean Sea in Balıkesir Province, Turkey
Burhaniye is a coastal district on the Aegean Sea in Balıkesir Province that spreads across fertile land between mountains and the sea. It sits east of the ancient city of Adramyttium and covers about 420 square kilometers.
The town was originally named Taylıeli after a Turkish bey who supported Seljuk rulers. Its current name honors Prince Şehzade Burhanettin.
The Burhaniye Kuvay-ı Milliye Museum, opened in 2008, displays objects and documents related to Turkey's independence movement and local heritage. Visitors can experience and learn about these important moments firsthand.
The district connects to major Turkish cities through regular transportation services, and Balıkesir Koca Seyit Airport is a short drive away. Good connections make it easy to reach from different directions.
In 1922, a single bugler named Borazan Çavuş saved the town from Greek forces by playing tunes that made them think a larger Turkish army was present. This quick thinking prevented destruction.
