Derinkuyu underground city

Derinkuyu is a multi-level underground city extending to a depth of approximately 60 meters.

It was opened to visitors in 1969 and it's believed to have been built during the Byzantine era for protection against Muslim Arabs.

The city could accommodate up to 20,000 people and had amenities like wine and oil presses, stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, and chapels.

Today, only 10% of the city is accessible to tourists.

Derinkuyu is the deepest known underground city in Cappadocia, Turkey.
