Nevşehir, Provincial capital in Central Anatolia, Turkey
Nevşehir is a provincial capital in Central Anatolia situated at 1,224 meters elevation in a transitional geographic zone. The city functions as a gateway to the nearby Cappadocia region known for its cave dwellings and distinctive rock formations.
The area functioned as Nissa during the Hittite period and came under control of Assyrian, Median, and Persian powers over centuries. Following Alexander the Great's campaigns, it entered the Greek sphere before becoming part of the Roman Empire.
The city serves as a hub for traditional pottery craftsmanship, with local artisans producing ceramic pieces visible in workshops throughout the area. These practices connect directly to the surrounding Cappadocia region's long-standing reputation for skilled handmade ceramics.
Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport sits roughly 30 kilometers northwest of the city center and offers flights to other regions of Turkey. Regular bus services connect to major cities, while local taxis and shared minibuses provide convenient daily transportation within and around the area.
During demolition work for modern housing in 2015, workers uncovered an extensive underground city beneath the city center. This subterranean complex suggests a much deeper history of human habitation in the area than previously known.
