Saint Theodore Church, Orthodox church in Derinkuyu, Turkey
Saint Theodore Church is an Orthodox place of worship in Derinkuyu with a square floor plan and a single apse. Its decorated ceilings display hair braid patterns while the walls feature religious frescoes and grape motifs throughout.
The church began its worship in 1858 under Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I, following reforms that affected religious communities. This period brought significant changes to how religious expression was permitted in the region.
The interior walls display religious artwork showing Jesus Christ in robes alongside Saint Seimeon with angels Gabriel and Michael. These images reflect the artistic traditions that shaped the spiritual character of the space before later periods of iconoclasm.
The structure uses special columns with small gaps between them designed to provide earthquake resistance. This building technique allows the church to better withstand seismic events and only suffer partial damage if needed.
The entrance area contains authentic gray grape carvings and two camel figures depicting a contest between brothers over their father's religious authority. This unusual decoration blends local artistic traditions with religious symbolism in an unexpected way.
