Alayhan, Seljuk caravanserai in Aksaray Province, Turkey.
Alayhan is a Seljuk caravanserai in Aksaray Province built with thick volcanic stone walls and vaulted chambers throughout its interior. The entrance portal displays geometric patterns and carved stone work, while the site includes lodging rooms, stables, and a courtyard with service facilities.
The caravanserai was built before 1190 and served merchants and travelers moving along the Silk Road. It connected major trade routes between the cities of Kayseri, Niğde, and Aksaray.
The structure shows the skill of stonemasons from Ahlat who mixed Seljuk design with Byzantine materials in their work. This blend is visible in how the walls and decorations were built.
The site sits about 35 kilometers northeast of Aksaray along the Nevşehir road and is easy to reach. It remains open for viewing, though you should expect minimal facilities in the area.
The entrance portal features one of the earliest known muqarnas vault designs in Anatolia. A rare double-bodied lion sculpture carved in red stone stands out as a distinctive detail at this gateway.
