Nevşehir Province, Province in central Anatolia, Turkey
Nevşehir is a province in central Anatolia with diverse terrain featuring underground cities, rock formations, and eight administrative districts. The area is shaped by a network of valleys and plateaus, with steep-walled gorges and open highlands dominating the landscape.
The area became a refuge for early Christian communities that carved churches into rock between the 8th and 12th centuries. These communities also built underground settlements to shelter from outside raids and religious pressures.
The region has long been a center for craftsmanship and farming, with local vegetable growers and wine producers shaping the land. Visitors today still encounter traditional growing methods and village markets that reflect the daily rhythms of local communities.
The region lies roughly 290 kilometers south of Ankara and connects to all major Turkish cities through a well-developed road network. Regular bus services link all eight districts together, giving travelers access to remote areas.
Beneath the city of Nevşehir lies an extensive network of underground rooms, with a large subterranean city discovered in 2015 during construction work. This discovery revealed an entire ancient civilization hidden directly below the modern city.
