Haji Bektash Veli Complex

Haji Bektash Veli Complex, Islamic shrine and cultural complex in Hacıbektaş, Turkey.

Haji Bektash Veli Complex is a religious shrine in Hacıbektaş featuring a mosque, library, tombs, and three courtyards linked by ornately decorated gates built with red and yellow stone. The buildings spread across multiple levels following traditional Ottoman architectural style and house a notable collection of historical manuscripts and objects.

The complex was established in the 13th century when Haji Bektash Veli founded his spiritual teachings and community in this location. Over the following centuries, Ottoman sultans expanded the site substantially, transforming it into a major religious center by the 16th century.

This complex serves as the spiritual center of Alevi-Bektashi faith, where visitors witness active religious practices and gatherings throughout the year. The community uses the spaces for worship and ceremonies, keeping the place alive as a functioning religious hub.

The site welcomes visitors daily with guided tours available in several languages to help explain the history and significance of each area. Wear comfortable shoes and allow enough time to walk through all three courtyards and surrounding buildings at a relaxed pace.

The Kızılca Halvet meditation chamber from the 13th century remains the sole original structure on the grounds and was used by Haji Bektash Veli himself. This secluded room reveals the simple and focused nature of his spiritual practice.
