Kolonai

Kolonai is an ancient settlement in Çanakkale Province positioned on a hillside with multiple layers of occupation visible in the remains. The archaeological site contains stone structure fragments, foundation traces, and scattered artifacts that span different periods of construction.

The settlement emerged during the pre-classical period and developed into an established center during the Hellenistic era. It remained connected to neighboring trade centers and participated in the broader networks of the ancient Troad region.

The settlement shows clear traces of Greek and Roman influence, visible in pottery fragments and inscriptions discovered during excavations. These finds reveal how different cultures coexisted here and maintained their trading relationships.

Visiting requires advance planning since local permissions may be necessary and regular public transportation does not serve the site. Arranging a guide or contacting local officials beforehand makes the visit more feasible.

The site displays transitional features between early mud-brick construction techniques and later stone building methods, documenting craft advancement across centuries. These visible layers allow visitors to observe changes in construction traditions directly.
