Babakale Castle, Ottoman fort at Cape Baba, Turkey.
Babakale Castle is a rectangular fortress at Cape Baba with four corner towers, shaped with five sides facing the sea and six sides facing inland. An L-shaped covered gateway with marble inscriptions marks the entrance and leads into the inner complex.
Admiral Kaymak Mustafa Pasha built the fortress between 1722 and 1729 under Sultan Ahmed III to defend the region against French pirates. Its construction came during a period when the Ottoman Empire was modernizing its naval defenses.
The fortress once contained a mosque, bath house, and fountains that brought water to support the garrison's daily life. These structures show how the Ottomans created a complete military settlement here, not merely a defensive outpost.
The fortress sits at mainland Turkey's westernmost point and is visible from above, making it easy to find from a distance. Visitors should know the site can be windy and proper footwear helps when walking over uneven ground.
Archaeological excavations in 2001 uncovered ancient foundations beneath the current structure, revealing that fortifications stood here in much earlier times. This location was thus a strategically important point for different cultures across centuries.
