Saint Ignatios Monastery

Saint Ignatios Monastery near Kalloni on Lesbos Island is defined by three separate basilicas with walls decorated in the 16th century style. The complex features a traditional wooden iconostasis positioned at the center of the religious structures.

The monastery was founded in 1526 by Saint Ignatios Agallianos and became a significant religious center during Ottoman rule in Greece. Its establishment marked the creation of a place that would draw the faithful for centuries to come.

The monastery is named after Saint Ignatios and continues to be home to monks who follow Orthodox Christian practices in their daily life. Visitors can observe how the religious community centers around the church and its spaces.

The monastery housed the Limoniada School, an important educational institution on the island that taught until 1923 and trained several generations of students. This school played a key role in the intellectual development of Lesbos during a time when such schools were rare.
