Dormition of the Virgin Mary, Eastern Orthodox church in Agiasos, Greece.
The Dormition of the Virgin Mary is an Eastern Orthodox church in the center of Agiasos, a hillside village on the Greek island of Lesbos. The building is made of stone, has a bell tower, and fits naturally among the old houses and narrow lanes of the village.
The church was built in 1815, during a period when religious construction was active across Lesbos. It was later listed as a protected building and archaeological site, a recognition of its value to the island's local history.
The church is the heart of village life in Agiasos, especially on August 15, when believers from across Lesbos gather to mark the Feast of the Dormition. On that day, the narrow streets around the building fill with people, music, and the scent of incense.
The church sits in the middle of Agiasos and is easy to reach on foot while walking through the village center. Around August 15, the village gets very busy, so an early morning visit works best.
Although Agiasos is a small hill village, the celebration on August 15 draws believers from the whole island and even from other Greek islands. The church is one of the few buildings on Lesbos to be listed as both a protected building and an archaeological site at the same time.
