The Valide Mosque features stone masonry construction with a pitched roof and a red stone minaret that extends into the Mediterranean sky.
Built in 1615 during Ottoman rule, the mosque served as a central religious structure for the Muslim community until the population exchange of 1923.
The interior of the mosque contains a 6-meter-high mihrab with detailed stucco decorations and originally displayed colored frescoes on its walls.
The Greek Ministry of Culture has allocated 1.2 million euros for restoration work, which began in 2019 under the Lesbos Ephorate of Antiquities.
The mosque's marble fountain, accessed through a marble staircase in the stone-paved courtyard, incorporated white marble with arabesque patterns.
