Castle of Mytilene, Medieval fortress at the northern harbor of Mytilene, Greece
The Castle of Mytilene is a medieval fortress on a hilltop overlooking the northern harbor, spreading across a large area with three distinct sections. The structure features fortified walls, towers, and defensive elements built during different time periods.
The fortress has roots in Byzantine times, with major expansions added by Francisco Gatillusio in 1373. Ottoman modifications followed after 1462, further shaping the structure and its defensive systems.
The fortress holds remains from different periods, including medieval churches and military structures left by various civilizations. Walking through the site, you can sense how different peoples made their mark on this hilltop stronghold.
The lower section is accessible throughout the day without charge, while the upper and middle areas require entry through the West Gate. The hillside is steep in places, so comfortable footwear is recommended, and shade is limited once you start climbing.
Inside stands a citadel called Megas Perivolos that once had five towers, with three still standing from the 14th century. These surviving towers quietly reveal the construction methods and strength of Gatillusio's era.
