Port of Spain, Capital city in Trinidad and Tobago.
Port of Spain is the capital of Trinidad and Tobago on the northwest coast of the island, where the town center sits by the water and residential neighborhoods climb into the green hills to the north. Between the business streets in the downtown area spreads a large park that serves as an open space for events.
Spanish settlers founded the city in 1560 near a native settlement and declared it the new capital of the colony in 1757. After British takeover in the late 18th century the cityscape changed through new public buildings and streets.
The city's name comes from a Spanish port that once supplied ships traveling through the Caribbean. Today you see street signs, markets and shops that reflect this multilingual past.
Most of the city can be explored on foot, with the center remaining compact and the northern hills cooler than the flat streets by the water. On weekdays there is heavy traffic in the morning and evening, so a visit in late morning or early afternoon feels calmer.
The Angostura factory has produced its secret bitter exclusively in this city since 1875 and exports it to bars around the world. The exact content of the recipe is known only to five people, all of whom work here.
