National Library and Information System, National library in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago
The National Library and Information System is a network of libraries providing books, periodicals, and digital content to people across Trinidad and Tobago. The system connects public libraries, mobile units, and school libraries together to deliver information access throughout the country.
The system emerged in 1998 from the merger of several separate libraries into one unified information organization for the entire country. This consolidation allowed for better use of resources and created a coordinated service reaching all regions.
The Heritage collection documents the lives, traditions, and important events of Trinidad and Tobago's people through books, photographs, and other materials. Visitors can explore and understand the country's history and culture directly through these resources.
The libraries are easily accessible across different neighborhoods, while mobile units also reach remote areas. It helps to locate your nearest branch and check opening hours in advance, as times vary depending on the location.
A specialized preservation and conservation laboratory was established in 2012 to protect the national collections for coming generations. This facility works to save valuable old documents and materials from deterioration.
