National Sun Yat-sen University, Public research university in Sizihwan, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
National Sun Yat-sen University is a public research institution in Sizihwan, Kaohsiung, set on a hillside between mountains and the strait. The campus spreads across several levels with views over the Taiwan Strait and hosts faculties in liberal arts, engineering, marine sciences, and other disciplines.
The university was founded in 1924 in Guangzhou and reopened in 1980 in Kaohsiung after closing during the Chinese Civil War. The reestablishment in Taiwan reconnected with the original academic tradition while developing new focus areas in marine sciences.
The name honors statesman Sun Yat-sen, whose ideas remain celebrated across Taiwan. Students often use the seaside location for group walks after lectures or as a meeting point between classes.
The campus sits away from downtown and requires a short ride from central Kaohsiung. Visitors may find a morning walk more comfortable when the grounds are quieter and the sea views are easier to enjoy.
The campus offers direct access to a coastal road often used by cyclists and walkers. Some university buildings sit close enough to the water that waves can be heard during lectures.
