National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, Marine biology museum in Checheng, Taiwan
The National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium is a public institution in Checheng, Pingtung County, dedicated to marine science and life from the surrounding seas. The site features three main exhibition halls showcasing aquatic environments from local waters, coral ecosystems, and oceans around the world.
Work on the building began in 1991 in a region known for its coastal location and access to the sea. After nine years of construction, the complex opened its doors to the public in February 2000.
The institution carries the Chinese name 海洋生物博物館 (Hǎiyáng Shēngwù Bówùguǎn) and serves as a place where people come to understand the marine ecosystems surrounding the island. Visitors can attend feeding sessions and touch pools where they interact directly with selected sea creatures.
The complex opens Tuesday through Sunday and remains closed on Mondays unless it falls on a public holiday. All areas are accessible by wheelchair, and most pathways run on a single level or with ramps.
In the Waters of Taiwan section, whale sharks swim through one of the largest tanks in Asia, holding more than five million liters. A curved acrylic panel allows visitors to watch the animals from below as they glide overhead.
