Qimei Township

Qimei Township, Township in Penghu County, Taiwan

Description

Qimei Township is an administrative division at the southern edge of the Penghu Archipelago, covering a small area with a rocky coastline facing the Taiwan Strait. The territory consists of six villages—Donghu, Sihu, Jhonghe, Pinghe, Haifong, and Nangang—scattered across this island setting.

History

Archaeological evidence shows humans settled here roughly 4500 years ago, with remains found in Nangang Village. Permanent communities were later established during the Ming Dynasty period, becoming the foundation for today's villages.

Culture

The six villages here each have their own character, shaped by generations of fishing families and maritime traditions that continue to influence daily life. Walking through them, you notice how houses cluster near the waterfront and how the rhythm of the community still follows the tides.

Practical

The best time to visit is outside typhoon season when weather is more stable and regular ferry connections to the mainland run consistently. Since the area is small and remote, bring sufficient supplies and allow flexibility in your return travel plans.

Did you know?

The name Qimei means Seven Beauties, referring to both a historical legend of seven women and seven geographic features scattered across the island. This dual meaning makes the name a connecting thread between the local story and the landscape itself.
