Wangan Green Turtle Tourism and Conservation Center

The Wangan facility is a sea turtle rehabilitation center in the Penghu region that teaches visitors about local marine life. It has exhibit spaces, tanks where recovering animals live during treatment, and educational areas where you can learn about turtle biology and ocean habitats.

The facility was founded in 1995 and welcomed its first visitors in 1997, marking a turning point for ocean conservation in Taiwan. Its creation came from the need to protect injured and endangered animals in this region.

The center demonstrates hands-on marine turtle protection through displays and guided tours where visitors watch staff care for recovering animals. You can see researchers working with injured individuals to prepare them for release back into the sea.

The site sits less than a kilometer north of Wang'an ferry port and is walkable from the harbor. You can choose between guided tours or explore on your own, and should prepare for changing weather conditions.

The center cares for turtles arriving with plastic in their stomachs and other injuries, documenting their recovery until release. Many visitors are surprised to learn how long it takes a wounded animal to become strong enough to return to the ocean.
